May
As we move into May, the gardening season is in full swing. With warmer weather and longer days, it's a great time to sow many types of seeds, both indoors and directly in the garden. Here's what you can start planting this month:
Start Indoors
Winter Vegetables
It might seem early, but now is the time to start thinking about your winter harvest. Plants such as Brussels sprouts and winter cabbages have a long growing season and should be started indoors now.
Pumpkins
If you didn't start pumpkins last month, you can still start them indoors early this month. This will help ensure they have a long enough growing season to mature before autumn.
Sow Outdoors
Corn
Corn can be directly sown into the garden now. Choose a spot with full sun and well-draining soil for best results.
Beans and Squash
Now that the risk of frost has passed in most areas, you can direct sow beans and squash. These plants love warm weather and will grow quickly once planted.
Herbs
Hardy herbs like parsley, dill, and cilantro can be sown directly outdoors now. These herbs prefer cooler weather and will bolt (flower and set seed) in high summer heat.
Salad Greens
Continue sowing salad greens for a continuous harvest. Many types can be sown every two weeks for ongoing fresh salads.
Summer Bulbs
Continue planting summer-flowering bulbs if you haven't already done so.
Remember, all gardening activities in May are dependent on the climate and weather conditions in your specific area. Always seek local advice if you're unsure, as your local garden centers or agricultural extension services can provide specific guidance.
